Connection between Nutritional Habits and Oral Health

A good nutritional habit plays essential part for maintaining a sound oral health as well as also helps to maintain a good overall health. Different nutritional status and diets can contribute to the development of several dental abnormalities like dental caries, osteoporosis, and periodontal disease and so on. This article will focus on some specific points to give clear idea about the relationships between dental health and nutritional habits.

Some foods can aid to get good dental health by giving protection against dental caries formation. Fibrous foods such as vegetables and fresh fruits are considered as good foods for teeth because they enhance the flow of saliva in our mouth. This increased saliva flow helps to neutralize the acids that are formed by microbial degradation of food particles in the mouth and helps the mouth to remain fresh and clean during chewing food particles. Fibrous fruits and vegetables also serve essential minerals that help to give more strength in our teeth, bones as well as help to run our digestion system.

Our digestive system starts with the intake of foods in our mouth as the first entry point. Our body gets essential nutrients to recover its loss of energy from these foods but it depends a lot on the ability to chew and swallow these food particles properly. The more you chew the more these food particles will mix up with saliva and other enzymes in order to degrade themselves. Thus the frequency of chewing and swallowing foods are also significant for completion of successful digestion.

For elderly persons, the relationship between nutritional habit and oral health is complex, sometimes controversial; actually there are some limitations in the current understanding. A proper oral health is needed in order to get the maximum outcomes from complete chewing of foods. But in case of elderly persons, the oral health is such significant that sometimes it impacts on selecting foodstuffs and thus nutritional changes take places. For individuals with absence of teeth in particular lack the proper chewing capability therefore they have to change their nutritional habits which sometimes may lead to a restricted intake of protein and other fiber containing foods. Thus the presence of natural teeth is well connected to a variety of nutritional intake and therefore contributes a lot to the consumption of different protein and fibrous foods.

We should know the nutritional habit and oral health connections clearly because it is not only essential to maintain the oral health but also for the entire body systems. After knowing all these, hopefully you can maintain an overall good health.
